Since the premiere of my requiem "Dreamtime" for didgeridoo, guitar and large orchestra (Philharmonie Köln 2013 - commissioned by the WDR Symphony Orchestra), I have been exploring the relationship between the individual and society on the one hand and the relationship between man and the cosmos on the other. The individual learns his view of the world, but is moulded by society. At the same time, the cosmos seems fixed and untouchable to us. But it also has an effect on us humans.
The magnificent space images taken by the Hubble telescope have given us a deep insight into the overwhelming beauty of distant cosmic structures. Seemingly static structures that move in apparent stillness. What is beyond this vast silence? How do humans position themselves? How do we act in front of this wonder? What is the significance of our actions, our destiny in a cosmic perspective?
This project "Beyond Silence" aims to translate the dynamics of these apparent dichotomies into sound, because sound connects the cosmic, the apparent infinity with the finiteness of the individual. For this reason, specific roles are also assigned to the individual sound bodies.
For me, the clarinet embodies the human to a high degree, its antipodes are the witty and capricious and the contemplatively deep songfulness: its breath is our breath.
It unfolds against the backdrop of the almost static, yet slightly rotating soundscapes of the string quartet, the cosmos.
